From 1894 he appears to have divided his time between Brooklyn, NY and southern California. The art community in Los Angeles was in its infancy when he arrived there in 1894. His first job was teaching at the Echo Mountain Summer School. He led a peripatetic existence in search of subject matter as an illustrator for Harper’s and Century magazines.
