Gorgeous watercolor painting of Gibson girl by Edmund M Ashe. American c.1867-1941. Approximately 26" x 21 1/2" WITH the frame & matting. WITHOUT the frame it measures 18 1/2" x 13 3/4". Signed lower left E. M. Ashe. Ashe was a painter, illustrator, teacher. He was born in Staten Island, NY in 1867 and died in 1941 in Mt. Pleasant, SC. He also lived in Westport, CT in 1905. He studied ASL. Member: NYWCC; Pittsburgh AA; Soc. Illus.; Silver Mine Guild; Norwalk founder; Westport AA. Began as journalistic illustrator working as a White House artist/correspodent for Leslie's Weekly, NY Tribune, NY World during the administrations of Wm. McKinley and Theo. Roosevelt, 1896-1904. He taught in Newark, NJ, Phila., and the Carnegie Institute. (Professor of painting and decoration) Small indentation over head of seamstress. Very good condition.
