Howard Carter discovered and excavated the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh King Tutankhamen. Carter got his start as an artist, tracing Egyptian hieroglyphics for others, before becoming an archaeologist himself. His search for the tomb of King Tut took nearly a decade, including a lengthy interruption during World War I, and was supported financially by George Herbert, the earl of Carnarvon. Carter discovered the tomb of Tut on 4 November 1922 and opened the tomb after Lord Carnarvon's arrival at the site on the 26th of November. Ironically, Tutankhamen had been practically unknown before the discovery, but news coverage of Carter's amazing find made "King Tut" a household name. Lord Carnarvon died of pneumonia in 1923, reinforcing the legend of a curse placed on those who had disturbed Tut's tomb. However, Carter himself lived to the age of 64 before dying a natural death in England.   « Less

SUPERB EVEN MAGNIFICENT. Antique late 1800s most likely original etching lithograph print of Venus and Cupid. unsigned. there is an address and name on the verso [please see images below] . Image: 10.75” X 20”. original Frame: 31” X 20.75”. Dear Potential Buyer: There has been much interest and many inquiries about this wonderful piece of art. How could something so magnificent be original? It must be an engraving, they say. That is why we have held on to this piece for almost a decade, showing it to experts and evaluating it with various methods as our own expertise has grown. One Print expert declared that it is an original ink drawing with some lines in graphite. Another print expert believed that this is, accomplished in mixed media which involved etching and then being pulled as lithograph, with possibly even traces of graphite, on a heavy grade wove paper and later laid on a poster board thickness for protection. Well, we're still torn and do not know what exactly is the case, but it is very beautiful and it is antique. Of course, the work is a copy of a painting by, Adolphe William Bouguereau.   « Less

Very Nice oil painting on panel by well-listed New York artist BERNARD GUSSOW 1881-1957. SIZE: 15.5" X 19". Framed: 25" X 20.75". Condition: Very Good.Artist's Bio: Russian-born Gussow (born 2 January 1881) was trained at both the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design; in addition he studied under Bonnat at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His first claim to fame seems to have been exhibiting two works at the Armory Show in 1913 (Movement and Figures). Gussow exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists between 1917 and 1934 and at Salons of America in the 1930s. By the mid 1930s Gussow stopped exhibiting but was as regular as clockwork up until then. By that time, he had moved from abstract compositions to recognizable urban subjects. The Whitney Museum of American Art, for example, has his Subway Stairs. The Barnes Foundation and the Museum of Modern Art also have his paintings. Gussow even participated in the Federal Art Project, contributing a post office mural (Recreation Hours) in East Rochester, NY. The figures in this painting might owe something to his contemporary Max Weber, who used similar simplified, mask-like faces. Or he may have gone directly to the Blue Rider Group or German Expressionists such as Franz Marc or Erich Heckel who were interested in “primitive” figures in landscapes. Weber also painted similar gently curving, cylindrical trees.   « Less

We looked her up and she had a website, but for the life of us we cannot recall her name.This is a lovely painting in a nice original frame.
