The goddess Astarte was the local version of the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar and the Greek goddess Aphrodite. As such she was the goddess of fertility, sexual love and lust. Like Aphrodite, she is also credited with being the mother of Eros. Although mythologically similar to Aphrodite, artistically Astarte was depicted in a typically eastern style and was more similar to Ishtar in that respect.
