Norwegian, early twentieth century Antique Norwegian rugs and carpets often stand apart among Scandinavian carpets by virtue of their shorter pile and western European design, like this splendid example. The Neo-classical design and palette relate more to modish French Savonnerie carpets and Aubusson tapestries than to Scandinavian Rya or Rollakan rugs. Here the soft red roses and leafy branches are arrayed amidst a central scrolled medallion and cornerpieces in soft aubergine on a warm tan ground. Only the simple dot and zig-zag border retains the Scandinavian folk art heritage.
