A rug can sometimes function as a painting in wool. This one was designed by the greatest abstract master of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso. Mask-like forms reminiscent of his Cubist period, but rendered in the biomorphic contours of his later work, dominate the composition. The rich gray, mauves, apricot, and blue of the main design contrast with the cool sage and sandy tones of the ground in this incomparable example of modern textile art.
