Oushak, Turkey, Late 19th Century - Recalling the classic Ottoman Turkish court carpets of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this magnificent Oushak has an allover design of blue arabesque star medallions in staggered alternation with smaller blue medallions with indented diamond contours, all set against a warm red field. A profusion of flowering vines in ivory, saffron, and soft green fills the areas between the medallions. An angular arabesque vinescroll border on a red ground frames the field, enclosed by saffron minor borders that provide the requisite contrast. Rarely do Oushaks bring to life the greatness of their ottoman forerunners with such grace and panache.
