Yuruk Divan Cover from Eastern Turkey, late 18th/early 19th century A series of medallions derived from the classical Turkish 'Small Pattern Holbein' pattern are arranged in horizontal rows separated by borders on this arresting antique Yuruk Divan cover. The piece has an hourglass and pinwheel border whose fine detail and scale nicely complement the details of the field. Although it looks like the right border is missing, the rug was made this way. A corresponding piece with the left border left out was the other half of the rug, woven separately so that they could each be tucked more easily into the horizontal crease between the seat and back of a Turkish sofa or Divan as upholstery covers. The deep palette of reds, magenta, blues, and apricot with ivory accents sets the design off to great effect.
