43181 Antique Ukrainian, Russia, late nineteenth century - This charming antique Ukrainian rug has a design inspired by the Savonnerie carpets of contemporary France. At the center of the soft tan field is a large multi-petaled flower or rosette, surrounded by rings of tiny flowers rippling outward like the surface of pond water. Small gold acanthus leaf cornerpieces complete the field. The main border adapts such acanthus leaves as a design of festoons or garlands suspended from a curtain rod. Minor borders of floral garlands and interlace flank the main one, with a neutral outer zone enclosing the entire composition. The delicate palette of golden, mauve, and cognac tones with sparing touches of mauve and black is beautifully accented by the lustrous quality of the wool pile.
