Ukrainian Needlepoint, late nineteenth centuryThis extremely elegant antique Ukrainian needlepoint carpet is the eastern European counterpart of French and English needlepoints. Like them it derives from the Rococo needlepoint and Aubusson tapestry designs, especially in the border. But alongside this heritage, there is a distinctly Russian or Ukrainian folk art sensibility that informs the overall palette of magenta, golds, and browns as well as the fine floral design of the field.
