Antique Tabriz, Persia, late nineteenth century Among the rug-producing centers of Persia Tabriz has the oldest continuous weaving tradition reaching back a thousand years or more. This exquisite antique piece preserves the design and technique of the great masterpieces produced in Tabriz under the Safavid dynasty. At the center a golden quatrefoil medallion replete with arabesque detail hovers amidst a lush array of curling, leafy vines on a burgundy ground. Cornerpieces of the same form and detail round out the field. A delicate palmette vinescroll border encloses the field, echoing the golden palette of the medallion and cornerpieces. The drawing of the design is masterful, rivaling the finest classical Persian forerunners.
