Antique Tabriz, late nineteenth centuryA grand scalloped medallion filled with a quatrefoil emits interlacing vines and palmettes on this arresting antique Tabriz. The monumental scale or proportion of the design resembles Sutanabads or Mahals and is unusual among Tabriz carpets. While the palette here is light and decorative, the finesse and detail of the various elements are remarkably faithful to the classic al Persian prototypes. The vinescroll palmette border is smaller and more delicately proportioned, offering an effective balance to the grandeur of the field.
