Antique Tabriz Carpet, Persia, late nineteenth century A dazzling classical Safavid Persian "vase pattern" unfolds across the field of this exquisite antique Tabriz. Many colored lush palmettes emanating from fine vines in interlacing figure eights sway gracefully amidst a rich red ground, enclosed by a red ground border of finely worked vines, flowers, and rosettes. Rarely do nineteenth century Persian carpets capture so well the sumptuous effects of color and design that were the hallmark of the great masterpieces of classical Persian weaving. No photograph can do justice to the exceptional quality of its wool.
