Antique Tabriz from Northwest Persia, late nineteenth centuryNineteenth century antique Persian rugs generally derive from the designs of classical Persian carpets from several centuries earlier, but rarely do they capture the precise detail and coloration of such classical forerunners, as this lovely antique Tabriz does. The field consists of a monumental pattern of interlacing strapwork arabesques in shades of green, apricot, and red against a deep tan ground with sprays of smaller flowers as minor detail. The border adapts the strapwork arabesques to a longitudinal format and sets them against a warm apricot ground that beautifully complements the coloration of the field.
