Hajijallili Tabriz, Persia, late nineteenth centuryThis elegant Hajijallili Tabriz is a masterpiece of counterpoint in soft color and complex design. The surface teems with millefiori, an extravaganza of minute flowers, burgeoning across the field. This profusion is reigned in and patterned by enclosing vinescrolls and changes in ground color to produce a large central medallion with star finials and matching cornerpieces. Upon closer inspection the flowers of the soft brown field appear to emanate from curving tree branches whose color differs only slightly from that of the ground. This penchant for subtle unity recurs again the border, whose forms and tones are only distinguished from the field by separating guard stripes.
