Antique Tabriz, Persia, late nineteenth centuryTabriz workshops were renowned for their ability to recreate the great masterpieces of classical Persian carpet weaving. In this lovely example we see again the classic garden carpets produced in Northwest Persia during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Two perpendicular borders intersect at the center, dividing the field into four quadrants like an actual Persian garden. Within these are rectangular compartments filled by trees of life supporting animals and birds, each a little carpet of its own. Narrow borders continue the framing effect of those that divide the field. The soft, almost tone-on-tone coloration departs from classical precedent, but it makes this an outstanding decorative rug.
