Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryAntique Sultanabads like this are famed for their graphic, large-scale rendering of classical Persian designs. Here two oval medallions spew forth sweeping leafy vines, surrounded further by arabesque cornerpieces. A bold palmette border with sickle-shaped leaves encloses the field with appropriate monumentality. The coloration of the carpet, however, is exceptional among Sultanabads, recalling as it does the much softer palette of Oushak Turkish carpets.
