Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryAntique Sultanabads are prized for their spirited and monumental rendering of classical Persian designs, but few can offer anything approaching the distinctiveness of this outstanding carpet. And while Sultanabads with medallion designs are not rare, it is unusual to find one with such a classically Persian scalloped circular medallion. The rich floral detail within the medallion and across the field is also remarkable for its fidelity to Persian carpets of the Safavid era, as are the palmettes in the border. But above all it is the splendid coloration of the carpet, with such extensive use of green, salmon, and pale blue, that recalls the great Persian masterpieces of the sixteenth century.
