Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA dramatically graphic allover vinescroll trellis repeats symmetrically across the field of this stunning antique Persian Sultanabad. Ivory palmettes, sickle-shaped leaves, and stylized flowers twist and turn across the arresting black field, with minor accents in soft reds and terracotta. A dynamic zig-zag vinescroll lade with palmettes and fine flowering branches makes up the main border against a red ground that offers a lovely contrast or frame for the field. Minor vinescroll borders proved an added accent on a fine scale in counterpoint to the overall monumentality of the composition.
