Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryWhile antique Sultanabads are known for their bold, large scale rendering of classical Persian carpet designs, this one is extraordinary in its use of a delicate Mina Khani pattern in the field with a bold border pattern. The field design has an array of rosette-like palmettes linked by a trellis of arabesque vines. The strapwork border is much more monumental than the field. It derives from the classical Persian carpets of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and here it offers a stunning contrast to the finesse of the Mina Khani. The rich palette of ivory, terracotta, and shades of blue is classic Sultanabad.
