Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryThis exquisite antique Sultanabad is exceptional for the finesse and precision of its design. In place of the bolder scale and sweep usually encountered in such carpets, this example has a field design of interlacing arabesque vinescrolls arranged in a latent compartment format. The tiny flowers interspersed among the vines create a ‘millefiori’ effect across the soft Butterscotch ground. A finely worked vinescroll border set against a teal ground reverses the color effects of the field while preserving a uniform palette across the entire composition. The lustrous pile sets the lovely coloration off to great effect.
