Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA boldly graphic allover trellis design of vines and palmettes in reds, greens, and ivory unfolds dramatically across a black field on this arresting antique Persian Sultanabad. A smaller vinescroll on a red ground reverses the color effects and scale of the field to provide a framing contrast. The formal repertory of the carpet is classically Persian, as is the rich coloration. But monumentality and animated drawing assert an almost tribal sensibility that adds an excitement and decorative power not to be found in the classical pieces that inspired this carpet.
