Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryWhile Sultanabad carpets are famed for their monumental treatment of classical Persian vinescroll and medallion designs, this rare and beautiful example has an allover pattern of finely detailed leafy sprays that create a subtle diamond lattice effect against a lovely soft terracotta ground. It is in the border with its large-scale palmette vinescroll that we return to a more traditional Sultanabad design, although here as well, the drawing remarkably fine and delicate. The palette of the carpet with its soft autumnal or orange and pale green tonalities, and its use of dark brown and blue for accents, is also classically Sultanabad, as is the lustrous wool of the pile.
