Antique Sultanabad, Persia, circa 1900A complex allover 'Herati' pattern of vines, flowers, and serrated leaves repeats symmetrically across the ivory field of this elegant but unusual Sultanabad. Sultanabads are famed for their grand sweeping scale and sense of design, but this example is much more delicately proportioned and finely detailed. A vinescroll with circular palmettes or rosettes comprises the border design, set against a red ground that delineates itself effectively against the field. The extraordinary delicacy of the drawing is complemented by the soft, gentle tones of the palette.
