Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryAntique Sultanabads are famed for their lavish floral designs, monumental, graphic scale, and exquisite color, and this one has it all. Across the field a grand design of curling vines emits a splendid array of palmettes and flowers, all rendered in shades of red and gold. These forms are outlined in brilliant ivory, crisply delineating the pattern against the rich chocolate ground. The borders consist of monumental rosettes in gold and chocolate brown set against a red ground, providing the perfect contrasting frame to the field. Despite the classical Persian origin of the design, the drawing is spontaneous and lively with an almost ‘village’ feel. Seldom do we encounter carpet that utilizes design and color to such effect.
