Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth century A lavish design of strapwork vines and palmettes in rich shades of red and saffron repeats in allover symmetry across the deep navy field of this sumptuous antique Persian Sultanabad. The vines are carefully configured into shield-like forms to create a latent design of staggered medallions amidst the complex patterning. Tiny ivory floral elements fill the intervening spaces in a delicate millefiori effect. In contrast to the miniscule detail of the field, the border utilizes a design of grandly lush palmettes, while retaining the color scheme of the field for a larger, unified visual harmony.
