Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryThe field of this classic Ziegler Mahal Sultanabad carpet displays an outstanding version of the "Herati" or "Mahi-Mahi" design, an array of palmettes, flowers, and curved leaves linked by a diamond-shaped trellis of vines. The design is so profuse, that the blue black ground barely shows, so that the design appears to float in deep space. The density of the field also plays against the openness of the vine scroll design of the red-ground border, creating a contrast of color as well composition. The multiple minor borders help to accentuate the framing function of the main border, almost like architectural moldings, lending decorative force and strength to the entire design.
