Antique Isfahan from Central Persia, late nineteenth centuryAn allover reciprocal compartment design of ogival medallions and concave pentagons in shades of pale rose, salmon, gray, and saffron repeats across the field of this sumptuous antique Isfahan. The contours of the compartments are rendered by fine leafy tendrils, while their interiors are filled with detailed palmettes and small flowers. A grand, sweeping arabesque palmette border continues the coloration and design texture of the field, although adapted to a different pattern. Smaller arabesque borders in saffron accentuate the main one, helping to provide a clear framing effect for the entire composition.
