All Silk Farahan Persian Rug, late nineteenth century - This sumptuous little antique Farahan is a masterpiece of Persian weaving. The fine Herati pattern of the field is crowned above and below by additional border-like panels, one of which actually echoes the main border of the rug itself. The patterning of the rug is consistent in form and scale, so that the variation within the design operates mostly in terms of color, especially the alternation between the red and golden-saffron tones. The focus on color is especially heightened by the lustrous silk pile.
