Antique Seychour Runner, Caucasus, late nineteenth centuryThis sweetly elegant antique Seychour runner has a delicate allover design of stylized flowers in red and green repeating down a pale apricot field. A grand border of large, multi-colored rosettes frames the field, enclosed by reciprocal and zig-zag borders to add framing contrast. While borders of rugs often contrast in scale with the field, it is unusual for the border to be bolder and larger than the field design as it is here. This effect is nicely echoed by the color, which is also richer and more varied in the border while the field is softer and more even in its alternations.
