41970 Antique Senneh, Persia, late nineteenth century - A spacious medallion composition unfolds with meticulous elegance across the field of this antique Persian Senneh. The finely stepped hexagonal medallion is filled with five stylized palmette and a spray of tiny floral motifs, all against a soft ivory ground. At either end to the side of the grand medallion finials, ivory cornerpieces containing only small Boteh or paisley elements complement the medallion, accompanied by pars of small octagonal medallions and clusters of human, animal, and geometric motifs. The main ‘turtle’ or vinescroll border encloses the field, flanked by fine vinescroll minor borders. The palette of soft salmon and ivory with touches of pale gold and green is set dramatically against the open navy field. A masterpiece of village rug weaving in the finest Senneh tradition.
