Antique Sarouk-Farahan, Persia, late nineteenth century A grand arabesque medallion design derived from classical Persian carpets commands the field of this magnificent antique Sarouk-Farahan. Within it crisply drawn sprays of flowers emanate from a central white rosette. Stems of spiky vine or grape leaves float amidst the rich terracotta field that surrounds the medallion, enclosed by arabesque cornerpieces in a contrasting cool blue green. A palmette vinescroll border is set dramatically against a deep blue-black ground that nicely echoes the medallion while framing the field emphatically. The drawing here is exceptionally crisp and animated, just as the color is exceptionally beautiful, putting this among the very finest Farahans.
