Antique Sarouk-Farahan, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA classic Persian medallion composition unfolds elegantly across the field of this exceptional antique Sarouk-Farahan. The scalloped medallion in rendered in ivory with vinescrolls in soft blue-green. The upper cornerpieces reverse the color scheme of the medallion while continuing its ornamental detail, while the lower cornerpieces have terracotta vines on an ivory ground. The ‘abrash’ of the field background echoes the color changes of the cornerpieces more subtly, with a deep terracotta below and a lighter one above. Blue-green cartouches and black finials sprout from either end of the medallion, surrounded by additional arabesque vinescrolls and palmettes. In contrast to the ultra delicate drawing of the field, the border has a much fleshier vinescroll set dramatically on a black ground, a perfect frame for the central composition
