Antique Sarouk-Farahan, Persia, late nineteenth centurySarouk-Farahans are renowned among Persian carpets for the refined and elegant treatment of classical medallion designs. But this example is distinguished not only by the grace and finesse of its design, but above all by its unusual allover composition. The basic design consists of interlacing spiral tendrils, but the changes in the ground color create a compartment or cartouche effect, entirely transforming the visual impression. The palmette border is also exceptionally lush, almost Mughal in style. Add to this the reserved palette of earthen tones and pale blues, and we have here one of the most extraordinary Sarouk-Farahans to be found.
