Antique Sarouk-Farahan, Persia, late nineteenth century. Lush palmettes, delicate flowers, and sinuous vines unfold with the utmost grace across the surface of this exquisite antique Sarouk-Farahan. Unlike the mass-produced Sarouks of the twentieth century, here the various design elements are united by a continuous network of fine vines that suggest a latent reciprocal medallion composition. The vinescroll palmette border is set against a red ground in pleasing contrast to the blue-ground field. The palette too is more varied and classic than later Sarouks, nicely complementing the more classic treatment of the design elements.
