43714 Antique Oriental Serapi / Heriz, Persia, late nineteenth century - The very finest Herizes like this are distinguished by the term Serapi for their especially spontaneous and abstract drawing, and for the exceptional quality of their color. But even among Serapis, this is an outstanding piece. The field consists of sequential stepped zones in navy, ivory, red, and soft blue, each filled with bold, angular vinescrolls. Still, nothing prepares us for the remarkably original border with its scalloped rectangular palmettes and ladder-like vines. Inspired by a truly tribal or village rug spirit, it challenges the best Bakshaish carpets produced in the same general area.
