But even among Serapis, this is an outstanding piece. The field consists of sequential stepped zones in navy, ivory, red, and soft blue, each filled with bold, angular vinescrolls. Still, nothing prepares us for the remarkably original border with its scalloped rectangular palmettes and ladder-like vines. Inspired by a truly tribal or village rug spirit, it challenges the best Bakshaish carpets produced in the same general area.
