43799 Antique Needlepoint, England, nineteenth century - The allover reciprocal design of this extraordinary antique English needlepoint carpet was inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement that reigned supreme in later nineteenth century Britain. The immediate inspiration was undoubtedly ceramic tile designs, which, like this carpet, set cross-like quatrefoils end to end in reciprocal arrangement with stepped octagons. The internal floral detail within these forms adds a note of elegant finesse and delicacy, like the rich yet reserved coloration of the design. The trompe l’oeuil border depicts a helical band or ribbon that wraps around an internal curling tendril pattern.
