Antique Needlepoint Carpet, England, late nineteenth century This stately antique English needlepoint carpet has an allover design of openwork medallions set within a rectangular framework. The medallions themselves are composed of circular wreaths or garlands with interior bouquets, all set in vertical and horizontal rows. The medallions are framed in turn by a larger grid of garlands or swags with bouquets at the various points of intersection. Additional sprays of leaves help to form a subtle outer frame or border. The pastel palette matches the delicacy and restraint of the design, making this an ideal decorative carpet.
