Antique Khotan, East Turkestan, circa1900The field of this magnificent antique Khotan is based on the classic 'Small Pattern Holbein' design widely used on Turkish rugs of the early Ottoman period. Here, larger stylized arabesque medallions alternate in staggered arrangement with smaller knotwork medallions. The hooked vinescroll design of the border also derives from the Ottoman rug repertory, but the cool palette of tans, gold, and teal is pure Khotan, making this a wonderful decorative piece.
