Antique Khotan Rug from East Turkestan, late nineteenth centuryThough woven in east Turkestan, this is extremely rare and unusual antique Khotan has field and border designs derived from the Kuba rugs produced in the Caucasus over a thousand miles to the west, a remarkable testament to the ties among all rug-producing regions. An allover array of lovely rosettes in ivory, soft blues, and saffrons pulsates across the rich terracotta ground, enclosed by a striking border of s-volutes and geometricized vines.
