Antique Khorassan, Persia, circa 1900. A lush design of arabesque vinescrolls and palmettes unfolds in radial symmetry across the slate blue field of this sumptuous antique Khorassan. The various vines, palmettes and flowers are so closely configured that the background function essentially as a dark outline, underscoring the predominantly golden forms of the design. The border system has a much finer scale of floral detail, but it preserves this golden coloration, utilizing the linear boundaries of the minor borders to distinguish the limits of the field. The draftsmanship of this carpet is extraordinarily fine and precise, doing proper justice to the classic Persian forerunners that inspired it.
