Antique Khorassan Persian Rug, late nineteenth centuryCompartment patterns have a long and distinguished lineage in Persian rugs and textiles, going back to the Timurid period in the fifteenth century. This stunning antique Khorassan maintains that grand tradition, dividing the field into compartments of similar shape set off from one another by color and varying ornament. One series is all in red, functioning as a kind of ground with fine floral elements as fillers. The others alternate in apricot and green with diamonds and vines as fillers. A lovely vinescroll with sickle leaves on an apricot ground plays off against the color and ornament of the field compartments. A very colorful and graphic adaptation of a classical format ideal for decorative use.
