Antique Kerman, Persia, late nineteenth century A lacelike design of flowering shrubs and palmettes based on the ‘Millefleurs’ designs of Kashmir embroidered shawls unfurls rhythmically across the rich red ground of this lavish antique Kerman. The design is so closely arranged that the red ground appears as little more than and accent for the contours pale creamy flowers. The main border adapts this design on a slightly smaller scale against a deep green ground. The palette of red, green, and ivory is inspired by the classical Indian or Moghul carpets of Agra, nicely complementing the North Indian or Kashmir origin of the design.
