Antique Kerman, Persia, early twentieth centuryOn this elegant antique Kerman a cartouche-like medallion with finials hovers amidst a grand architectural border whose arch-like indentations echo the form of the medallion on a larger scale. Delicate vinescrolls float around the medallion in the intervening space. Two additional zones occupy the field at either end of the carpet, each containing cartouches in the form of the field, but turned sideways. Additional vines fill the outermost section of the borders system. The pale, two-tone palette, the architectural quality of the borders, and the naturalism of the floral detail all reflect the impact of the great Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets produced in France, although the interlocking structure of the end panels may owe something to Persian miniature painting as well. Altogether an extraordinary carpet.
