Antique Kerman, Persia, late nineteenth centuryKerman carpets are famed for their lavish ornamental sensibility and fidelity to classical Persian tradition, as this example illustrates so well. The field consists of a sinuous allover design made up by quatrefoil, circular, and ogival cartouches, each of which has another complex pattern within it. The areas between the cartouches are filled with a swarm of writing vines, leaves, and flowers so closely arranged that the dark background appears as little more than an accenting outline. The main border has a classic Persian design of oblong cartouches in arranged in series. Despite the richness of the detail, the coloration is soft and delicate, making this first-rate decorative carpet.
