Antique Kerman, Persia, circa 1900. A dazzlingly complex lace-like medallion of classical Persian derivation spreads across the field of this elegant antique Kerman. The medallion is framed by cornerpieces made up of swirling vines, while sprays of flowers serve as finials at its upper and lower ends. A welter of flowering vines fills the intervening areas. Multiple narrow borders combine to frame the field, offering a suitable framing contrast in scale and color. The relatively rich palette of reds, blues, and greens recalls the saturated coloration of the early Persian forerunners, underscoring strong classical heritage of the carpet.
