Antique Kerman Persian Rug by Master Aboul Ghasem Kermani, late nineteenth centuryThis exquisite antique rug is the work of the great "master of masters," Aboul Ghasem Kermani. Treading the line between ornament and pictorial representation, its shows a lush forest full of animal inhabitants, including the crowned lions and eagle, symbols of the reigning Qajar Dynasty. Ultimately the composition is the setting for the classic Persian legend of Leila and her lover Majnoun, who is shown kneeling and despondent as he gazes upon the image of his beloved. Here we have the Persian equivalent of a masterpiece by Raphael or Titian. For other carpets in our collection made by Master Kermani, see inventory numbers 2991, 3206, 3412, 3416, 2910, and 42108.
