Antique Kashan, Persia, early 20th century This luxurious antique Kashan has richly ornamented ogival medallion surrounded by an ivory field burgeoning with delicate vine sprays and palmettes in shades of red, mauve, and soft blue. The main border of arabesque vines is dazzling in its complexity and fidelity to classical Persian design. Set on a red ground it deftly echoes the outer part of the medallion in color and detail. Like the ornamental detail, the long proportions of this carpet also derive from the great classic forerunners of the Safavid period.
