Antique Shirvan, Caucasus, late nineteenth century A series of geometric medallions in ivory and red repeats across a dark blue ground on this meticulously detailed antique Shrirvan. Within each of these is a smaller quatrefoil medallion spewing forth branches or vines rendered as latchhooks, with smaller stylized animals scattered across the remaining space. A series of borders enclose the field – first an S-Dragon border, then a stylized vinescroll, and finally a double vinescroll or ‘crab†border. Shrivans are prized for the perfection of their weave and their crisp drawing, but this example is exceptional even among the best of its kind.
