Antique Karabagh Long Rug, Caucasus, late nineteenth century. While most antique Karabagh rugs represent a distinctive Caucasian tradition of village rug design, some like this lovely example relate more to Persian rug traditions from further south. The field has the classic Persian Herati design of curling leaves and flowers arranged against a diamond vine lattice. Here the design elements in gold with violet accents are so closely configured that the dark ground emerges as little more than an outline. The gold ground vinescroll border provides an effective contrast in color, as does its acanthus vinescroll motif, reflecting another rare Karabagh tendency – a taste for western European design elements.
